New East Side is a village-like residential neighborhood in the heart of Chicago. It’s bordered to the north by the Chicago Riverwalk and to the south by the sprawling green space of Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park. At its eastern edge, trails and harbors line the shores of Lake Michigan. 4.6-acre Lakeshore East Park is the neighborhood’s scenic centerpiece.
New East Side mostly consists of newer high-rise towers featuring stylish apartments and condominiums with access to luxurious amenities. Other housing options include contemporary townhouses with attractive brick and glass facades.

The modern mixed-use developments of New East Side offer a great variety of stylish contemporary restaurants. Blackwood BBQ at the Illinois Center serves delicious pit-smoked BBQ sandwiches and plates, including melt-in-your-mouth brisket. At Millennium Plaza, Sweetwater Tavern and Grille pairs elevated American pub grub with a fantastic selection of craft beers and seasonal cocktails. Along the Chicago Riverwalk at New East Side’s north, Island Party Hut is a vibrant tiki-style bar and grill with casual eats, tropical cocktails, and frequent live music. New East Side is home to some of Chicago’s finest hotels. Dining and drinks options at these hotels include hand-cut prime steaks at The Swissotel’s Palm Restaurant and The Fairmont Hotel’s sophisticated craft beer taproom Columbus Tap and chic cocktail lounge The Bar. Other businesses within New East Side include upscale grocery store Mariano’s and gourmet deli and food market Bockwinkel’s. Homes in New East Side are within walking distance of Chicago’s premier shopping streets State Street and the Magnificent Mile. State Street features a flagship 12-story Macy’s department store alongside many other retailers and restaurants. Magnificent Mile has over 450 businesses and features major shopping malls such as 900 North Michigan, Water Tower Place, and The Shops at North Bridge.
Things to Do
Lakeshore East Park is the centerpiece of New East Side. This 4.6-acre green space contains beautiful gardens, a playground for kids, an interactive water feature, and an area for dogs. The Chicago Riverwalk is a scenic stretch running alongside the Chicago River at New East Side’s northern boundary. The green spaces of Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park form New East Side’s southern boundary. Millennium Park is home to iconic public artworks Cloud Gate and the Crown Fountain while Maggie Daley Park features gorgeous gardens, an ice skating ribbon, and a three-acre Play Garden packed with fun activities for kids. Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion hosts many concerts and events throughout the year, including performances during June’s Chicago Blues Festival, September’s Chicago Jazz Festival, and the ten-week summertime Grant Park Music Festival. Millennium Park and Maggie Daley Park adjoin sprawling Grant Park to create a 319-acre green space popularly known as Chicago’s Front Yard. Other Grant Park attractions and amenities include The Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Museum Campus, which features Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, and Shedd Aquarium.
New East Side is served by the City of Chicago School District.
